After years of creating special chocolate creations for family and friends, Patricia Russell has expanded her candy making with the opening of Patricia’s Chocolate Emporium.

“It’s exciting,” Russell said about the new chocolate shop in Zillah, noting the opening of the shop was all about timing for the Zillah native.

“It seemed like the right thing to do, even in this tight economy,” she said.

Russell’s husband, Kevin is a member of the Zillah City Council. He has also been helping out at the shop, making drinks and helping customers select the perfect chocolate from the numerous choices.

“This is a chance for Patty to showcase what she does well,” he said. “We are tickled.”

However, she is not only relying on fine-tuned baking skills, she also brings several years of business experience to the shop.

Russell worked at a local candy company for six years and also made candy, jams, jellies and ice cream at Granger Processing.

The chocolate company’s owners were high school sweethearts. They will celebrated their 41st anniversary on May 31.

It was actually Kevin’s mother, the late Cecelia Russell who taught Patricia many of her candy recipes.

“I enjoy the smile on people’s faces when they bite into candy I’ve made,” Patricia Russell said.

Each year she creates special recipes and provides candy trays to family and friends during the holidays. Although she uses several tried-and-true recipes, she said her Russian teacakes and her clusters are the top favorites. Russell continues the search for new candy confections.
